Tipping the Scales, What Gets You There?
What tips the scale for you? When decisions have to be made, what is that very thing that makes you pull the trigger and say “alright, dammit!”
When I was 6 years old, a big tabby cat decided to wander into our yard and make us his new family. My Dad wasn’t going to have any part of it, and wouldn’t allow “Tiger” into the house . Yes, we had already named him. My sisters and I were glued to the window at the back door watching the poor cat huddle for protection from the miserable January weather. “ But Daaaad” we all whined in unison… And then we got the call..”Fine, let that damn cat in!” We opened the door, and in ran Tiger…straight down the hallway into the livingroon, and onto Dad’s lap. We, and the cat had won!
The decision was made, and we were all the better for it.
Fast forward 20 years. My wife and I were riding on our motorcycle down South Lakeside Drive in Williams Lake. There on a corner was a cute Cape Cod house. White picket fence and the works! We both looked at it as we rode by. 20 minutes later, we both looked again on our way back. This time we stopped. We weren’t looking for a house, but we could afford one, and this had caught our attention.
A few days later, we finally got to see inside and we realised that this was not the house for us. We had to keep looking, but at least we were now in the hunt.
What we did end up buying was a starter home needing many renovations (sure it needs a bathroom, a kitchen, a complete mechanical upgrade, a new sundeck, and a total gut of 25% of the house…but the roof looks great!) which later became a home we rented out as we moved onto bigger and better things. Being able to buy it for $48,000 didn’t hurt, either.
There have been a few tipping points in the world of the Deaks:
After suffering for 14 months with a brand new Toyota that was a lemon from the very first day, an internet pop up ad led us to finally getting rid of it and buying a Mazda. We still own it and still love it. Zoom Zoom!
Knowing we needed a change in our life and location in this world, a completely unrelated email spurred the decision for us to move to Vernon. A decision we have never regretted.
For years my friends told me I should be in real estate. Financial responsibilities and a fear of the unknown stopped me from doing it. My decision to finally become a Realtor was based on…”well it’s about time!”
These were tipping points for us.
What are they for you? And what will they lead to? A new cat? A new house? A new life?
